The NSDC 2025 Secondary Public Speaking Professional Learning Workshop is designed to provide teacher-participants with essential skills in coaching competitive public speaking. This intensive one-day program will cover key elements of competitive secondary speaking, including:

  • Speechwriting and structure 

  • What adjudicators are looking for

  • The coaching process and helping students find a unique voice

  • Impromptu speaking

  • Common mistakes and how to correct them 

  • How to incorporate feedback

  • Running trials and selecting student representatives

Specifically, we will focus on constructing speeches for the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition.

The session is suitable for all teachers and coaches, including those who are new to public speaking and seasoned coaches looking to refresh their skills and understand emerging competition trends.

  • Taylor Donovan — Co-Convenor of NSDC, Speaking Competitions at The Arts Unit.

  • Lucy Beale — State Plain English Speaking, Legacy Finalist. Member of the Combined High Schools Debating team, 2023 and 2024.
